The Festival of Ukrainian Easter Eggs: A Tradition of the Ukrainian Easter Holiday

By Olha Kashyna

Many people and children draw and paint eggs for the Easter holidays. Each family paints Easter eggs. Each school holds a competition for the most painted eggs. Participants and winners are awarded. The most original and beautiful Easter eggs are brought to the capital, Kyiv. At the festival, all guests come in national embroidered blouses. This holiday is very fun. People sing old Ukrainian songs. They eat “pasha”, eggs, and drink the ancient Ukrainian drink “uzvar.” Every company and family hugs and congratulates each other. Everyone asks, “Christ is Risen?” and the answer is always “Truly Risen.” Each family paints Easter eggs. So the old holiday passes from the elders to the younger members of the family.

My Life in Ukraine

By Alla Kobza

My name is Alla Kobza.  I am from Ukraine.  My husband and I live in Olympia.  My daughter is studying at the University of Washington.   I have a very good family.  But I really miss my country and my family in Ukraine.  In Ukraine lives my mom, my brothers.  Our family is very friendly.  We have a tradition of getting together with the whole family and cooking our favorite meals.  I live in a city with more than 2 million people.  My hometown is Kharkiv.  This city will not leave anyone indifferent.  Kharkiv has a lot of flowers and trees, a beautiful Gorky Park, a zoo, a dolphinarium, many exhibitions, museums and theaters.  People in our city are very friendly.  I miss my friends and our meetings.  We always have topics to talk about.  No matter where we meet, it’s always fun.  This was before the war…
