Uganda

My Story

By Janet Manguna

Hello, my name is Janet Manguna and I’m in Level 4 English at South Puget Sound Community College. This article is about my life in Uganda as a new refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In 2005, my family and I fled Congo because of a tribe war that started in the early 1990s. My family and I were taken to a refugee camp in Uganda to escape the war in Congo but when we arrived in Uganda, life there was not as easy as we thought it would be. We were put in a huge warehouse for about five months, then we were given basic household goods, food, and some house-building materials along with hoes and machetes for farming. After those five months we were given land and a place to build our turkana house to start with. Then we waited to harvest our crops so we could sell them and afford to build a better life.
