Long Discussion Questions

  1. Compare Walter and Beneatha. How are they similar? How are they different?
  2. What do you think will happen to the family in their new house?
  3. Do you think Beneatha will achieve her goals? Do you think she will follow Asagai to Nigeria? Do you think she should give Geroge Murchison another chance?
  4. How does Walter change throughout the story? How do you think he feels at the end of the story? What do you think he will do next?

Writing Prompts

  • Chapter summary: Choose one chapter. Write a short summary of the chapter. What are the most important 1-3 things that happen in this chapter? Your summary should be about 3-5 sentences.

 

  • Response to a quote or section of the story: Choose a quote or a short section of the story. Describe what the quote or section means. What is the main idea? Do you agree or disagree? Why? Have you had a similar or different experience?

 

  • How I feel about my home (past or present): Think about a place that you have lived. You can think about your home now or your home in the past. Describe your home. What does/did it look like? How do/did you feel about it?

 

  • Intergenerational misunderstandings: An intergenerational relationship is a relationship between two people who are much older or younger than each other. For example: a parent and a child, a grandparent and a grandchild, an older friend and a younger friend, etc. Think about an intergenerational relationship that you have. What is your relationship? How is this relationship difficult, helpful, or special?

 

  • Write a long summary for Chapter 11: Imagine what might happen in Chapter 11. What happens when the family moves into their new house? What happens to Beneatha, Walter Lee, and Ruth? Your summary should be about 5-8 sentences.
