Meeting Notes

SPSCC is in the process of migrating its administrative management system from an antiquated system to PeopleSoft. The migration project is called ctcLink because all the Washington State community and technical colleges will have the same administrative management system at the end. When you hear the terms PeopleSoft or ctcLink in meetings, they pretty much refer to this migration project. For more information about the project, go to the ctcLink Dashboard.

The migration project is important to the discussion of OER and open pedagogy because once SPSCC goes live with PeopleSoft in 2022, SPSCC will be expected to identify and label all their OER and Low-Cost Materials classes. For more information, go to SBCTC OER & Low-Cost Labeling Policies for Washington Community and Technical Colleges.

With almost 1 in 4 students report that they frequently do not buy textbooks because of the cost, using OER-enabled open pedagogy in our courses can bring equity in the classroom. OER-enabled open pedagogy can also empower minority voices and other cultural perspectives to be heard by inviting students to co-create and contribute to the knowledge.

SPSCC is invested in OER and open pedagogy:

  • A subscription to PressbooksEDU was purchased in June 2020 to provide a publishing platform for OER creation and collaboration. All faculty and students can create an account to use Pressbooks.
  • An OER Taskforce Committee was created to discuss rubrics for creating and evaluating OER as well as stipends to faculty who want to do an OER project.

CoP Goals for 2020-2021

  • Explore and identify emerging open pedagogy trends, tools, frameworks, etc.
  • Discover how to use open pedagogy in our disciplines
  • Create OER or implement OER-enabled open pedagogy in our classes

Action Items To Complete Before Next Meeting (November 19 at 3pm)

  • Create a Pressbook for everybody in the CoP to contribute and document our work and discussions
  • Explore open pedagogy as it pertains to your discipline and bring 2-3 items (concepts, articles, tools, etc.) to discuss
